It is not a workaround. It is how TYPO3 normally works, sorry :)

I do. I do not say that using sdWrap is the best or most elegant way. It looks a bad way to me to use stdWrap with point-n-click mapping. But this is how it is in TYPO3. If you have better ideas, you are welcome to make a patch :) Until that, the official recommendation for your case is to use stdWrap.
