[TYPO3] tt_news catmenu questions

I have a couple of questions relating to using a Catmenu within
tt_news that I hope someone can help me with. I have searched the list
as well as googled for an answer and can't find one.

Question 1: Is there a way of only showing subcategories within a
tt_news catmenu?
So if my categories look like:
Parent Category
	Sub-Category 1
	Sub-Category 2
	Sub Category 3
I only want to list
Sub-Category 1
Sub-Category 2
Sub Category 3

Question 2: Is is possible to list only categories beginning with a
specific letter of the alphabet? I have about 200 categories to list
and I want to break these down alphabetically so one one page I will
show all categories beginnign with "A" and on the next all categories
beginning with "B" and so on.

Many thanks for anyone who can help and point me in the right
