[TYPO3] Do I really need gzlib to install a typo3 extension??!

I'm trying to install the kickstarter extension, and when I do the 
search in the admin I get:

Call to undefined function gzfile() in 
/www/site/typo3site/typo3/mod/tools/em/class.em_index.php

Do I have (freaking) recompile php and add gzlib or something?

Can I install the kickstarter any other way?

Also when I do a search for it on the site I get this:

http://typo3.org/extensions/repository/?tx_terfe_pi1%5Bview%5D=search&no_cache=1&tx_terfe_pi1%5Bsword%5D=kickstarter

Is the first one really right?  Hasn't been updated since 2006 and it's 
beta??
