[TYPO3] Previewing Template changes in Workspace?

Hi,
Once you have a live site, and you want to make some changes, seems like 
a workspace might be a good place for this. Does the following make sense?

You could do some things like map a DS to an new template, or update an 
Object to point to a new lib.newmenu, link to a new css file to change 
color scheme, etc

Then you could preview this using the preview page in draft / custom 
workspace.

Then once you have it work, Can you publish all the changes at one time? 
or do you have to publish each change?

Are there any good examples of extensions that force things to use the 
workspace and how to use the api correctly.  The Core Api manual lists a 
lot of calls, but does not give a lot of examples of how to use them.
