+1 to Christopher's comments. It's really quite striking how quickly one can
learn to use page TSconfig to really trim down the interface and make it
much more intuitive for the end user. We've also had a lot of success with
combining a good editing config with frontend editing.

With regard to Andrew's points about user getting to grips with the joys of
sysfolders and the like - our general approach is to write custom backend
modules that provide a much simpler route to editing records for
news/products etc than the usual list view for a sysfolder. We customise
them for each situation and have dubbed them 'piggyback' modules as they
make full use of the Typo3 API and just provide another route to editing.

I totally agree that the backend can leave a lot to be desired, but there
are also very many existing options to simplify it, and far too many people
run for the hills rather than digging them out.
