yes, not out of the box AFAIK ... you have to implement an own
authentication service if you maintain you users in another system.
Therefore search the lists and docs for 'auth' and have a look at
cc_svauthdemo extension for an example authentication service.

There are already different authentication services supporting various
types of authentication . Have a look and grab one that is similar to
your problem.
