[TYPO3] retrieve / update users groups

Hi,

 

I'm trying to write a extension to update users groups based on paypal
subscription. I cannot find the existing api to get/update a users group. I
found where its being stored in the db but I'm assuming theres already a
method/function to do this already. Can anyone point me in the right
direction?
