  I won't be able to use htmlarea in present or future websites
> because it is in the protected Typo3 folder and so can not be modified.


Go to the delete/backup for htmlArea and take a backup copy of it, saved 
to you local desktop. Then uninstall it (Not delete, just uninstall) as 
a global extension.

Then using your backup copy of it, import a new instance of htmlArea. 
The one you've just imported will be a local copy that you can edit
