[TYPO3] utf-8 to show up correctly not only in FE/BE but in mysql clients, too?

Hello,

just a question about storage of characters into db (using MySQL 4.1.20).
Looking into the database tables, greek strings are not viewable when
using the command line mysql client or phpmyadmin. I'm seeing strings like:
Ανακοινώσεις

Everything shows up fine in FE and BE.

How can I have both right? (FE/BE to show correct characters and
phpmyadmin or mysql client to show correct utf-8 strings). Database and
tables were created with  DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8.
