[TYPO3] Help with jw_calendar extension

I am trying jw calendar which shows a month menu like so;

but my trial can't seem to get any further than;

For some reason mondifying the FlexForm parameters does not seem to 
make much change to this. I am using typo3 4.1.1

I understand that this works out of the box. Could there be a conflict  
somewhere? I have even tried this installation on another version of
typo3 3.3.6 with the same result. Any pointers would be helpful.


Alternatively, if anyone knows of another calendar, that can be edited
from the frontend (logged in users only to and and change records)
that information would be welcome.
