[TYPO3] limiting length of RealURL segments?

Hey everybody...

is there some way in the RealURL configuration to tell it to truncate 
path segments -- including filenames -- if they are longer than a 
certain number of characters?  My site is generating truly enormous URLs 
and I'd like to snip them down a bit.  The only way I can find is to 
write my own userfunction, and it seems like there should be an easier 
way...
