[TYPO3] Edit panels in kickstarter extension

I have an extension out put from kickstarter. It is just a fairly
simple sortable table. In some other examples I see the edit panels
beside each record in the front end view. Can anyone tell me please
how to out put an extension so that the edit panels for each record
show please. What is the 'switch' for turning the edit panels off and
on?
