We run 3MHz dual core Intel CPU with 2 Gb RAM and two disks in
(soft)RAID 0 array. It runs a number of sites that have several tenths
thousands visitors daily. Typical load at peaks is 2.2, which is not
bad. This server also runs mysql and I am happy how it performs. We
bought it from a company with a "name", so it cost us a bit more than it
could cost in a smaller company. We paid nearly 1400 USD.

Even if you buy a very expensive server, it does not mean it will
perform good. You have to watch it and optimize it. It took two months
for us to find optimal configuration for our load. We even did custom
modifications to typo3 database structure for better performance (some
of them are now in 4.1).
