[TYPO3] workspaces and extensions

Yesterday I installed an extension which corrupted my localconf.php
and crashed my site.  I was able to fix it after a few minutes, but
this was worrying me because, I am able to deploy my website in typo3,
but of course I still want to tinker with it from time to time.  But I
will be afraid to do anything other than simple edits if I have to be
afraid that I could crash the site by installing something.

Basically my questions is what are the best practices in this
scenario?  Do people have a parallel typo3 installation?  I know there
are a few extensions to copy between typo3 setups.  Or is it possible
to setup the workspace so you can only install the extension in the
draft workspace.
