[TYPO3] Backend User Causes Fatal Error in DAM Ext

I have a typo3 3.8 installation where the Admin user can get to all 
functions perfectly, however when a backend user is configured for 
access to the Media sysfile and the appropriate Filemounts, the 
following error occurs when accessing Media->File or Media->List:

This is listed in the far right frame:
    Fatal error: Call to undefined function: escapestrforlike() in /home/.../typo3conf/ext/dam/lib/class.tx_dam_selectionquery.php on line *276*

How do I correct this?
