As much as I recall the 1-2-3 has an option to load the initial 
database. Perhaps you missed that step? Is your typo3 database empty?

The major change between MySQL4 and MySQL5 was in the login mechanism 
which caused MySQL4 clients to not be able to login to servers 
implementing the newer password hashing mechanism. If this is the case 
you can fix it by setting your password according to the following 
instructions:
