[TYPO3] Vanity URLs

How can I "beautify" links to pages and/or file objects in typo3? Instead of 
something like

	http://www.test.com/cms/index.php?id=12

I want something like

	http://www.test.com/project/foo

Or maybe /cms/foo, if that is possible. This is important for publications, 
where you need to put some link in, which should be easy to remember and even 
simpler to type.
