you right - fdfx_2cols is limited only to RTE.

few months ago Bernhard Kraft post an interesting extension that may do 
exactly what you need. In short you can divide column into sub-columns 
with a special content element "container". I use it successfully in one 
of my project. It is a big step forward for MTB.

The extension was available under this URL:
