I had the exact same behavior yesterday when doing a test install on my
laptop to confirm problems with an MSSQL server. I never figured out what
it was, though, but searching for extensions that *do* exist in the
repository yielded no results, and trying to update the list yielded the
same message you write, also the same blank screen once in awhile.

I never got it to work, but I could download the .t3x files manually and
upload them to the backend. This was on Windows XP with Apache 2, PHP5 and
MSSQL 2005 Express, by the way. What is your setup?
