Okay, so now I'm reporting back... With failure... I still get the
same "[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]COUNT field incorrect or syntax
error" error when IMPORTing or COMPAREing. But now, I also get other
errors. Here's the entire output from a COMPARE attempt:

Warning: odbc_exec() [function.odbc-exec]: SQL error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL
Server Driver][SQL Server]Invalid object name 'tx_dbal_debuglog'., SQL
state S0002 in SQLExecDirect in c
\Inetpub\wwwroot\typo3\sysext\adodb\adodb\drivers\adodb-odbc.inc.php on
line 540
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]COUNT field incorrect or syntax error
Fatal error: Call to a member function MetaType() on a non-object in c
\Inetpub\wwwroot\typo3\sysext\dbal\class.ux_t3lib_db.php on line 1096

(I configured localconf.php to be verbose about SQL operations, which would
probably explain the first warning). FYI, when doing an IMPORT attempt, I
get hundreds of those warnings before it fails.

Any ideas? I tried updating MDAC to 2.8 SP1, but to no avail.
