[TYPO3] direct mail / function getURL() causes an internal server error (500)?

hello folks,

is there any issue concerning the direct mail extension, that leads to 
an 500 internal server error, while fetching the html-mail. the script 
aborts at the line

// class.t3lib_htmlmail.php, getUrl()

if($fd = @fopen($url,"rb"))    { ...

this reproducable crash exists since a server-exchange with this majo 
changes:

PHP4->PHP5,
MySql3->MySql5,
PHPmod->FastCGI,
HTTP->HTTPS

we installed an instance of the t3-installation to simple 
HTTP-environment (same server), and in that environment the error does 
not occur.
