It seems, that I've solved the issue:  The extension mmforeign was 
missing.  I wonder, why the dam-extensions didn't complain about 
that during installation.  But after installing it, I can again add 
references to images.

Just for the protocol:  It is no good idea to install dam_ttcontent 
as long as dam_index is not installed!  The installation itself 
will work, but after that you are not able to display any other 
page, neither in the front end, nor in the backend.  Even re-login 
is not possible.  Every attempt to display any page will result in 
an error message:  "PHP Fatal error:  Call to undefined function:  
txdam_getmediatca()"
