[TYPO3] get value of GPvar in ts?

Hi,
I've been trying to get the value of GPvar:L for a few hours now with no 
luck.
Here is the ts:
asdf = TEXT
asdf.data = {$GPvar:L}

I placed the value into a template marker to see what it returned and 
all I see is {$GPvar:L} on the screen

Is it possible to retreive the value from GP?
