Yes.
Don't use typenum for this. Use typenum only for switching layout from 
html to wap/xml/printer friendly and so on.

To get different templates for pages or page branches put a TS-template 
in the root and overwrite it completely or some parts on the pages where 
you have used typenum now.

Example:

root

site root
  page a
    page a1
    page a2
 page b
   page b1
     page b1.1
     page b1.2
   page b2
  page c
    page c1
    page c2


So
- put a base template into "site root".
- if you want a different layout for "page c" and below put a template 
into "page c"
- if you want a different layout for "page b1.1", "page b1.2" and all 
other siblings (but not "page b1" itself, then make a sys template and 
include it on "page b1" with "template on next level"

And if you want each page with a dfferent layout look at the manual of  
the "template selector" extension and manual MTB.
