[TYPO3] Multilanguage website, sr_language_menu: Select Official Language (ISO code)?

Hi there,

I'm trying to set up a multi-language site but I'm having problems.
When the combobox "Select Official Language (ISO Code)" in the Website 
Language form is empty (for my alternative language - French here) 
everything works almost fine except that in the FE of sr_language_menu I 
won't see the country flag or language name. If I set the "Select Official 
Language (ISO Code)" to French then in FE i can see the flag (or language 
name) but clicking on it does not lead to the translation page anymore.

strange behaviour.
any hint?
