[TYPO3] 500 Server Error: Server caused a hiccup

I am having problems installing both Typo3 versions 3.8 and 4.0 on my  
current webserver. While other servers I have used with no problems,  
my current webhost server is generating the follow error:

500 Server Error
A misconfiguration on the server caused a hiccup

This error occurs all the time with 4.0, but with 3.8 it occurs  
occasionally. I run into the error when:
Templavoila is installed
Trying to add a hyperlink using htmlArea RTE
Trying to click on the "events" section under Web when julie_events  
is installed
Using DAM and the "list" option under Media

I also see the error in various other locations. I am developing a  
site using version 3.8 currently and have been able to get around the  
error, although it makes Typo3 life tougher as I am lacking many  
features. My webhost is trying to help me solve the issue, but we  
have not been able to find a solution yet.

Any advice?
