[TYPO3] restricting file acccess within the "news" extension

I'm using the news (2.4.0) extension for two purposes:
- put up items for everyone to see
- attach files to those items that I want to restrict access to

I'd like to limit the file access by IP or by usergroup.

The problem thus far is that when I attempt to limit the news by 
usergroup, the entire news item is shut off... not only the file.
