That's some extremely nasty code. Rather than futz around with
deliberately creating invalid markup, why not use one of the
suckerfish [1] or whatever:hover [2] solutions? As far as I can tell,
they'd solve your problem very simply.

...and there's no need whatsoever for that table, whatever solution
you're using ;-)
