For templating:

Look at 3 of the tutorials (Modern template building part 1, Modern 
template building part 2+3, and TemplaVolia) the choice then becomes 
your, but in my opinion I don't like templavolia at all (again just 
personal pref)

A few other things - Get a copy of TSref as it will become /is 
essential! It truely has just about everything you need to know to build 
sites, you just need to learn to use it, read it and then you'll begin 
to remember it.

Alsoa  few things you might useful are typoscript by example,and tscof 
(for setting up users)
