[TYPO3] General Question about DBAL

Greetings :: I am interested in finding out more about the Database 
Abstraction Layer. Not sure where to start (i.e. what is the essential 
documentation, how mature is the project)

My specific interest in using the DBAL is to migrate to using Microsoft 
SQL Server (Windows 2000) as the backend database for Typo3, running on 
a separate server (obviously) from my Linux box serving up Typo3. 
Honestly this is a low priority issue for me. So I would be interested 
in knowing people in the Typo3 community think that is advisable or not. 
  The main motivation for using a remote implementation of MS SQL Server 
is to consolidate databases in the company, avoiding having to maintain 
and manage a separate database for CMS.
