Converting an ä to ae is not a bug, but the common style in German. It's 
not even an invetion of the Internet era but a long custom.

Problem:

Bär (Engl. bear) => Baer
Bär => Bar (Engl. bar)

So for the common case the Umlaut conversion is correct. Generally a word 
will be meaningless if you remove the Umlauts.
