[TYPO3] no thumb generated!

hi
i know this problem has been discussed a few times already but this is 
really wierd!

my im is installed properly and i am using im functions myself to create 
thumbnails for my gallery and everything works fine
BUT
thumbnails in the be ar NOT created... why is that?
what could be the possible reason for that?
it really drives me maddd!
