[TYPO3] Login form/status on every page

Hi,

I've been researching for most of the day now, and I would appreciate
some input on how to include a login box in the template so that it
appears on every page.

I'm thinking the best way would be to use TypoScript to include the form
and if the user was logged in, display their username instead.

How is this done? Any direction would be appreciated.
