help of cause is appreciated. I think the crux of the matter is 
definately the check method via fopen etc. This is what has to be 
analyzed over and over again to figure out what could be a better solution.

This means the method checkURL() is the playground, if you would like 
maybe to try out different methods to find out if a server is responding 
or not.

Also of cause, the module could need some nicer interface design, in 
case you are into this topic! :)
