[TYPO3] menu depending on the language

hi,

I have the following menu:

1 = TMENU
1.NO.allWrap = |*| |    |*| |*|

and it works ok. But I want smaller spaces in my French version of the 
menu, so I tried this:

[globalVar = GP:L = 4]
1 = TMENU
1.NO.allWrap = |*| |   |*| |*|
[else]
1 = TMENU
1.NO.allWrap = |*| |    |*| |*|
[global]


but it doesn't work. any ideas why?
