[TYPO3] seperation of content and functionality

Hello list!

I was wondering if there are some "standard" procedures or ways that 
have been proven to update a sites functionality without interfering 
with its content.

Actually it would be nice if it could be accomplished easily to modify 
ts templates and tsconfig on a development machine and after that 
updating the database of the site with the new templates.

Does someone have experiences with that?
