[TYPO3] images in BE FILELIST have no thumbnail, path issue?

another question. for the image thumbnail functionality in the filelist, 
does imagemagick need be installed?

i went to a different installation i have, and looked at the filelist, 
and the img tag is there but the img tag looks like this (view source)

???
