[TYPO3] 404 handling with simulate static

This article tells how to get proper 404 handling with RealUrl:

I'm using simulatestatic, but can't get that to work for 404 handling.

Should it work the same as it says in that article, or does it only work for 
RealUrl?

I've tried setting filename to 404, 404.html, index.php?id=404, but nothing 
works.

Suggestions please.
