[TYPO3] Environment Var as DB Host

Aloha Typeheads,

	I am currently testing out running TYPO3 on a platform at Media Temple 
that has the recommended practice for db access set to an environment 
variable. The install tool does not allow this to occur. The variable is 
$ENV{'DATABASE_SERVER'}. I went looking around the core for a few 
minutes but I don't have much time at the moment for that and I really 
don't want to mess with the core for obvious reasons, though I would not 
totally be against it if needs be. Any ideas? There is an actual address 
I can use but it has intermittent success regarding access which I 
believe is due to the nature of the service, which is a grid server. 
Typo3 4.0.2, PHP 5.1.6, MySQL 4.1.11. Thanks!
