[Typo3] iwi image catalog vs. safe_mod

Hi all. safe_mod dead ends again. Here is what I get when I try to add 
an image with iwi image catalog:
"1: Copying file 
'/hsphere/local/home/bljakaj/pvc-stolarija.hr/fileadmin/uploads/tx_iwiimgcatalog/IMGP0664.JPG' 
failed!: The destination path 
(/hsphere/local/home/bljakaj/pvc-stolarija.hr/uploads/tx_iwiimgcatalog) 
may be write protected. Please make it write enabled!. 
(tx_iwiimgcatalog_item:2:image)"

Off course the path in question is not write protected but appears that 
web server cannot write there for some, most likely, safe_mod reasons. I 
was wondering is there some comfortable workarround for this? I've got a 
crazy idea to manually copy the files to destination folder and then 
manually create the need database entries but this is just too much of 
an overhead...
