[Typo3] College extension...

Hi list!

	I am currently developing a website for an institute, their needs being 
a normal site and a system where the marks and attendance details of a 
student are displayed on the basis of his roll no/password, what i have 
done as of now is a separate php module for it, and linked it through 
the main site. (primitive :D) now i want to integrate it with typo, the 
functioning is very simple, on entering roll and password it should 
query a database and display the results, thats all. As fas as my 
knowledge of typo goes, i think i have to make an extension for this.
	What I wanted to know is, is extension the right way to go? if yes 
which is the best way to start making an extension (mention docs also 
please :D), or is there a better way than this.
