Btw, I don't know if you got my last post on linux-install list, but
on Fedora the installation is actually quite easy - your standard PHP
and GD should work, the only piece you might need is either
ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick. Both of these, statically built are
available at http://typo3.sunsite.dk.

You can actually install typo3 pretty easy if you use RPMs -
http://typo3.mitka.us. Sorry, 3.7 version only, but it'll give you an
idea how the whole thing should work and be set up on RH/Fedora.
