[Typo3] mergeDataArrayToTemplateArray vs substituteMarkerArray

Hi,

when writting custom extensions i usually use 
the "mergeDataArraToTemplateArray  TV"-way 
to integrate my own html templates.

I wonder if there are any advantages/disadvantages 
compared to the classical "substituteMarkerArray"-method
Besides the need of TV of course.

I am not quite sure but using "substituteMarkerArray" seems
a little faster to me ...
