This is a fallacy... Modern search engines (i.e. overture, google,
etc.) can handle urls with vars in it fine. The only problem is making
sure the spiders can reach ALL content in your site, which comes down
to good side design. If you have to submit a form [in the form of a
javascript drop-down for instance] to reach page content, then yes,
those pages will not be indexed.

As far as I am concerned, the push towards 'human-readable' urls is a
point of UI, much like the trend of REST services (i.e.
http://www.example.com/news vs http://www.example.com/xml/news)
