[Typo3] database won't accept FE username change

Hi list

I've been trying now for hours (...days) to make it possible far a FE user to change his username.
Tried with various extensions such as CWT Community , feuser_admin, sr_feuser_register.
With sr-feuser_register it works to change all other data fields but the username. 
I suspect it is blocked because the user is logged in with its username.

Does anyone have an idea where to start from here? 
Tried so far all extensions, simulatebe extension etc.
Maybe its database related? I am using MySQL 4.1.10a and Typo3 3.8
