1) Not sure but mabey because of some specific settings concerning your
page tree? prev/next property links pages that share the "same 'pid' as
the current page id (or 'value') - that is the next item in a menu with
the current page"(TSRef) - it will always start working one level below
the page you insert the template on...

2) split is not correct: there's no |*| but a || in the middle as we
want to "rotate" the middle value repeatedly (see TSRef, optionSplit,
Example 4).
