If it were my choice, I wouldn't use JavaScript either in this case, 
but I'm not deciding.

For your information, Joey's solution is fine but doesn't work when the 
link text is wrapped on several lines and you want a background color. 
In this case, each part of the string becomes a little box of its own 
and it gets rather ugly (see attached screenshot).
