[Typo3] Image scaling before saving

Hi list,

sorry, I've posted this already in the dev-list, but I guess that could have 
been the wrong place. 

Is it possible to scale uploaded images in Typo3 before they are saved (moved to 
the upload folder) or do I have to implement this with an own extension?
I've got a special case here, where I don't want the original uploaded files in 
the upload folder, but instead smaller, downsized versions.
