[Typo3] create news from content

Hi,
 
Before I dig into the tt_news documentation, is it possible too create a
news item based on a content flexform? I want to show certain fields
(defined in a templavoila datastructure) of articles in a news item. I
also want to be able to check wether an article is used or not.
 
Is there already something like this available?
