[Typo3] Resolving parsed links from within sub templates

Hi Folks
I Have a problem with sub templates and images. I put in an image and it
doesn't show on the site. In the browser the path ends up with /sub/ as a
directory instead of /main/ .

I can't make it work with:

fileadmin/template/main/images/image.gif
or
/images/image.gif
or
../images/image.gif

What does work, is using an absolute URL. I'd prefer not to do that as it'll
have to be changed when the site is relocated to another server to go live.
Have others experienced this prob? Is there a remedy?
